Embracing Holistic Wellbeing: Living Fully from the Inside Out

The word “holistic” is often misunderstood, yet its meaning is beautifully simple—it encompasses the whole of something. Still, many of us shy away from exploring or embracing the full spectrum of our being.

We’re becoming more comfortable talking about mental health, physical wellness, and emotional balance—but when it comes to our spiritual wellbeing, discomfort often creeps in. Unless it’s attached to a formal belief system, spirituality is often left out of wellness conversations.

This separation isn’t new. Historically, the physical world was assigned to science, while the unseen—our emotions, beliefs, and spirit—was relegated to religion. This divide still influences how we approach wellness today. (Research suggests.)

Even as we now understand the deep connection between mind and body, the spiritual or energetic self often remains out of reach in mainstream wellbeing practices. For example, I’ve attended mindfulness workshops rich in valuable content yet left feeling incomplete—because the spiritual self was left out.

As a holistic counsellor, I support clients in bringing all parts of themselves into alignment. I’ve found that true wellbeing only comes when we honour and integrate the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of our being.

In our 2008 work, we wrote:

"Holistic Counselling facilitates change in the physical body, the mind, and the energetic self by recognising:

  • The body is an instrument of the mind.

  • The mind determines what is going on in your outer world (perception).

  • The energetic self holds your infinite potential, allowing you to accept or reject what your body and mind perceive to be real - bringing forth the possibility of creating change through conscious choice and truly living from the inside out." (Bird & Kennedy, 2008)

The Energetic Self: A Key to Holistic Wellbeing

The energetic or spiritual self, guides our life experiences. It doesn’t define outcomes as good or bad - it simply seeks growth through experience. It’s the mind that categorises, interprets, and filters those experiences. That interpretation generates emotion, and our emotional state then influences how the body responds.

🧠 The Mind → 💓 The Emotions → 🧍🏽The Body

Let’s break it down:

  • Thoughts influence feelings.

  • Feelings shape how we behave or respond.

  • Repeated emotions become physical habits or conditions.

Understanding this helps us consciously shift from negative patterns to positive, life-affirming wellbeing. It’s not about ignoring pain, stress or grief - but about recognising that every emotional or physical state can change when we shift our thoughts, beliefs, or energy.

🌿 Holistic wellness is not about fixing what's broken; it's about rediscovering your wholeness.

Final Thought

Even in moments of stress, anxiety, or despair, we can choose differently. Holistic wellbeing begins with awareness—of our thoughts, our feelings, our patterns—and the courage to change. We can honour every part of ourselves, including our spiritual self, and start to live fully from the inside out.

At Chi Balance Holistic Wellness, we guide and empower women to reclaim their balance and step into a whole, aligned sense of self.
