Finding Hope in a Dark Place

I woke up this morning feeling a little unsettled, do you ever get days like this? You open your eyes and have a sense of forbearing something is not right; so, you lay there not wanting to get out of bed.

Even when we feel like this, we know we still have to get out of bed on school days, workdays, and days when the alarm grates you out of that awesome dream. But this is different. Today felt heavy, slow and my feet were dragging even before I got out of bed.

Sure enough, I got a call from one of the beautiful elders in my life.

Before greetings were exchanged, I knew something was brewing. Then out it came, fast, furious and jumbled together …

“If I painted how I feel inside about myself and the world, it would be all black. I am scared, I am feeling all the darkness in our world and it is overwhelming me and I feel like it is drowning me. What can I do to make myself feel better? Do you have something that can help me to cope? My image of our world is black, everything inside me is dark, there is no light. I need help.”

Okay. I took a slow breath in and calmly replied – “Stop, take a breath, what if you took your pencil and scribbled on a piece of paper all the darkness you are feeling as a continuous line all over the page. Don’t lift the pencil off the page, just go around in circles scribbling lines until you are done.” “What may it look like now?” “What form does the image before you take on? Is it totally black or would it have gaps between some of the lines?”

“There would be some gaps!”

“Yes, there would be some gaps. What would those gaps in between the black lines represent?”

“HOPE!”

“Hope and light that is you, your beautiful giftedness that you share out every day.”

“Now take this new feeling and breathe in this beautiful sense, fill yourself up with hope and then breathe out this energy to the world.”

What would the world look like if we all breathed out our beautiful giftedness, light, hope, love, peace, joy, or compassion as examples. All the beautiful giftedness that makes up humanity’s potential best. We, all together, each in our own small way, would change the world.

Sometimes when we forget and get caught up in our darkness and take on the darkness of the world’s worst behaviour’s, we lose ourselves. In these moments, STOP; TAKE A BREATH; slow down the thoughts running amuck in the head and refocus your giftedness to the world and ask yourself “what am I giving the world today?” If it is reflective of the dark energy of the planet in crisis and or chaos, you have a choice to share this reflection with others or do it differently.

Doing it differently - Ask yourself ‘what you want to feel?’ Breathe in this energy and flow it out into the world. In your small way you will make a difference.

Consider doing some creative activity to get the darkness out of your system like the scribbling exercise and see what happens, you might just change your world! Just a little. Hope!
