Changing Lives for Women 50+: The Social Issue

Updated: Jan 26, 2022

Australia is a highly diversified culture that holds great knowledge in our nation’s elders and emerging elders (aged 50+). These people hold the greatest knowledge around relationships, life skills, leadership, spirituality, pragmatism, industry knowledge, community knowledge, history, how to do stuff (with and without technology), including dealing with exceedingly difficult and challenging situations, and in general – are very awesome people with insights about pretty much everything, plus much, much more!

Why then, do we find so many of these amazing people, including women 50 and over – living in such financial hardship that they are at risk of homelessness, couch surfing, living in a room with friends or family, or in their car as some examples?

There are so many women in this situation now and in every minute that passes, the risk continues to grow. Many of these women are ex-executives and professionals in their field with many years of experience behind them. Others are highly skilled women across a diverse sector of community and others, who are less skilled in relation to the workplace, are very highly skilled across other areas of life.

These are truly amazing women who have had (or are in the process of having) their sense of purpose removed, and their self-esteem stripped. Some are dealing with feelings of alienation, abandonment, and fear and some are unable to get themselves out of a Jobactive and health system that instead of providing the support they need, continues to break these women down – often deepening already strained mental health issues.

The causes of these issues are complex and include, but are not limited to divorce, domestic violence, family trauma, pre-existing health issues, sudden job loss, lack of affordable housing, lack of financial education, lack of access to suitable support networks, and more. The solution requires a holistic-systems approach that links government, non-government organisations, corporate, and community together. We cannot do it alone.

Workshops 4 Life (W4L) and Positive Empowerment Group (PEG) have been established as an employment and fee for service social enterprise (SE), also known as a WISE (Work Integrated Social Enterprise) that aims to help women 50 and over (50+) regain economic security and rebuild their lives. We are not a complete solution but we aim to do our best.

Hence, we need your support. Helping us by 'sharing' or promoting upcoming programs/events and support services to help women at home and work - be it via organisational sponsorship, assistance with grants, or something else, we would be deeply grateful. If you'd like to discuss opportunities with us, please reach out via our email: "connect at workshops4life.com" as we'd love to hear from you.

In the meantime, please subscribe and stay in touch with upcoming events, products, programs and services - and help us, to help other women recover, and live financially secure, safe, and healthy lives. :-)
